Our aim at Macmillan Academy is for each student to;

1. Leave us understanding the local labour market.
2. Know the different pathways available ie Further Education, Higher Education, Apprenticeships, Traineeships, T levels.
3. Become confident career decision makers.
4. Able to reflect on their decisions by seeing the wider picture, exploring possibilities and becoming life long learners.

One of the key aspects of the Academy’s CEIAG strategy is to ensure that students leave the Academy fully prepared for employment. There is an ethos of high expectations within the Academy and this culture very much applies to student destinations.

The Governing Body have made it clear to the Executive Team the importance of student destinations and hold the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to account on this issue with the same rigour that they do over academic results.

Central to our provision in this area is to ensure that the students have access to high quality impartial Careers Education and Guidance and significant resources are dedicated to ensuring that this can be delivered effectively.

The Academy has always taken responsibility for delivering Careers Guidance through its own staff. Mrs Emma Turner - Head of Careers/Assistant Head of Post 16, Ms Cath Cook - Careers Practitioner are members of the support staff and have this responsibility as their core role with the Academy with an emphasis on delivering face to face guidance to our students.

This team works within a dedicated, well-resourced careers library. In addition to specialist career staff the SLT give significant support in this area and have a one to one interview with all students in Year 9 and Year 11 prior to subject choice options.

We have increased capacity to our own provision though a service level agreement with the Middlesbrough Integrated Youth Support Service. This additional provision is often deployed in the support of vulnerable students.

In a recent addition to our careers ‘resources’, we have made extensive use of former students who are now in employment as role models for our existing students. These ex-students have come in to the Academy to support our students with advice and have also been used as Guests of Honour at our Awards Evening. One of our former students is now a Governor at the Academy. There are several posters of former students around the Academy representing a wide and varied range of careers.

The CEIAG team meet on a regular basis to develop, monitor and evaluate CEAIG across the school. Macmillan Academy termly review progress through the Compass Tool, supported by Tees Valley Combined Authority and dedicated Careers and Enterprise Coordinator, Janine Armstrong, employed by the TVCA.

CEIAG is also monitored through regular feedback from students, parents/carers, staff, governors and our partners. This feedback is collected through observations, questionnaires, forms. Strategies to continually improve are included in the Macmillan Academy 5 Year Development Plan.

Destination data is used to assess how successfully students make the transition into the next stage of education, training or employment. This information is reviewed and used to offer more informed guidance to students and has also enabled us to make some adaptations to our curriculum and delivery of CEIAG.

A designated school governor has responsibility for overseeing the quality of careers guidance.
