Busta' Rhyme Competition 2017-02-06
Thank you for your interest in Macmillan Academy. I hope that you will find this site useful and informative.
Macmillan Academy has been providing life chances for young people in Middlesbrough for over twenty years and it is with a sense of pride that we look back over past successes and look forward to future developments. We are an organization that rejects complacency and always strives for improvement and as such we have built up a reputation nationally not only for outstanding results but also for being innovative and forward thinking.
We have had a very happy and successful 2016 at Macmillan Academy, and recently celebrated a superb set of GCSE and A level results. Performance increased significantly in all key areas despite a national decline in results. To summarise at GCSE, an impressive 73% of students achieved 5 A*-C grades including English and mathematics and at Post 16, all Year 13 courses had a 100% pass rate, 56% of A level entries being graded A*-B and a fantastic 77% of vocational entries were awarded the highest levels of Distinction* or Distinction. We are particularly proud of how well our most disadvantaged students performed in comparison to national averages. Students from all backgrounds and all abilities do well here and it is testament to our determination to 'inspire every student to succeed'.
Once again, the vast majority of our Post 16 leavers were successful in reaching their first choice destinations and are going to universities far and wide to study a real range of courses including: medicine, media and journalism, international fashion promotion and all of the more traditional subjects. Several students have also gained the employment or apprenticeships they were aiming for.
Whilst I am of course delighted with these examination results and outcomes, the Macmillan Academy experience is about much more than just these. We try to achieve a healthy balance between ensuring our students achieve well academically and that they develop character through nurturing individual talents and interests in a range of enriching opportunities. Our weekly enrichments and programme of educational visits continue to enhance student learning and there have been impressive numbers of students making excellent use of our new sports facilities throughout the year. There have been unprecedented successes this year in cricket, hockey, handball and football and a very successful sports tour to Spain.
In addition, we continue to develop the arts and the sell-out production of the musical, Grease, the dance shows and the annual Christmas and Spring concerts were all fantastic showcases for our talented musicians and performing artists from all year groups. We have had several visiting authors and were treated to a performance by former teacher David Telfer of his one man show, 'Notes from the Front', which provided a moving insight into the lives of those who go to war and fight for their country.
I am pleased that the spirit of volunteering is increasing and as such academy students are making a significant contribution to the local community developing vital skills along the way. We have received recognition by the National Citizen Service, Duke of Edinburgh and the Royal British Legion for our students' work in this area. Notably, we also had our first student to receive a Gold Duke of Edinburgh award from Buckingham Palace, London.
Our motto is ‘inspiring every student to succeed’ and we encourage that within a spirit of co-operation and due regard to personal care and health, and a commitment to sustainability.
I hope you are able to take the opportunity to look around the academy and to meet the staff and students in order to have a real sense of what we are capable of achieving.
Yours sincerely P Latham Principal
