Gatsby Benchmark 7:
"All students should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes
both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, college, universities and in the workplace."
Careers Guide for Parents, Carers and Young People
Throughout the year, our students have the opportunity to meet representatives from local universities, colleges, apprenticeship and training providers via assemblies, workshops and more recently, virtual talks and tours. Exploration is also through tutor time, using web based sites and UniFrog.
As early as year 7, students will be invited to take part on the Shine programme and numerous STEM activities based at local universities.
In Year 11 students are able to attend the TVCA Careers Expo annual event, attended by universities, training providers and apprentice providers.
All students have access to a large and thriving Careers Library. The library offers research into universities, sixth form and further education colleges, special college providers, apprenticeships and traineeships.
In the summer term, Post 16 timetable is collapsed, to focus on options after sixth form. "Meet the Expert Day" brings together experts from Higher Education and employment. Over 50 workshops are available for students to attend. The day is bespoke for each student, as they choose to attend workshops pertinent to their future and their interests. Also at this stage, specific workshops begin for Oxbridge candidates and early UCAS applications ( those interested in medicine, veterinary science and dentistry).
Macmillan Academy has an active Alumina, with past students choosing to return to Macmillan Academy to share their experiences and offer advice. We have a participative group of Governors, who also enjoy offering advice to our students, through workshops or mock interviews. Part of the school and college tutor role, is pastoral, which includes guidance, aspiration and sign posting students towards their future ambitions.
