Year 8 is the year that quietly decides a great deal. The work gets harder, and the habits students form now are the ones they will carry into their GCSE years. The students who thrive are almost always the ones whose families know what is coming and how to help.
That is why I would like to invite you, together with your child, to our Year 8 Families’ Information Evening — a single hour, and the most useful hour you will spend on school this half term.

What we will cover
- What Year 8 looks like: the curriculum, what changes from Year 7, and the key dates for the year ahead.
- How we measure progress: how your child is assessed, when you will receive reports, and what the grades on them actually mean.
- Where to find the information you need: homework, attendance, behaviour, reports and the calendar — which platform holds what, and how to log in.
- How to support at home: routines for homework, reading and revision — how much your child should be doing, and what good independent study looks like at this age.
- Who to contact, and when: the quickest route to an answer if something is not right — and your questions at the end.
Why we ask you to bring your child. Much of what we share is about habits your child needs to build for themselves. It lands very differently when they hear it first-hand, sitting next to you, rather than second-hand on the way home.
Also in your diary. This is the first of two key events for Year 8 families. Our Year 8 Parents’ Evening follows on Thursday 3 December, where you will meet subject teachers individually. October gives you the whole picture; December gives you the detail on your own child.
