MACMILLAN ACADEMY TRAINING SCHOOL SUPPORTS TRAINEE TEACHERS AND EARLY CAREER TEACHERS IN THEIR JOURNEY TO BECOME EXPERT TEACHERS
TEACHER TRAINING
We have a strong culture of ITT development within the academy, in fact over a third of our staff were ITTs at the academy.
We host 20+ ITT placements each year for trainee teachers working towards their PGCE qualification. We have developed highly successful partnerships working with Campus Tees School Alliance in partnership with York Saint John University, Teesside University, Durham University, The University of Sunderland, Northumbria University, Teesside University, Shotton Hall and Durham SCITT.
Part of our ethos is that many departments take ITTs, over the last 3 years we have taken trainees in English, maths, MFL, art, business, PE, science, RS, music, drama, health and social care, history, geography, ICT/computing, design and technology, and food. ITTs are very successful at Macmillan – 97% of trainees in the last three years have successfully completed their placements.
We offer a bespoke training programme for all ITTs led by our Lead Induction Tutor. This complete package offers weekly training, mentoring and joint observations with feedback to ensure consistency of judgements and quality assurance of assessment documentation. We pride ourselves on our experienced team of mentors and ensure that regular in house and HEI training is delivered to continually upskill our staff in this vital role. New mentors are encouraged and supported continually.
- Highly experienced professional and subject mentors who view initial teacher training as a moral duty to ensure that students of the future will be taught by highly effective and passionate teachers
- The opportunity to work in an 11 to 18 school, offering experience teaching/supporting students of all abilities from year7 to 13
- Peer support – You will be part of a large family of ITTs as we support placements for between 25 to 30 students each academic year
- Bespoke, whole school, pastoral and department professional development opportunities offered on a weekly basis
- The opportunity to be involved in enrichment activities to further develop the cultural capital of our students
- Macmillan Academy is a wonderful place to work and train, the entire staff body are so supportive and will do the utmost to help you to thrive.
EARLY CAREER TEACHERS
Macmillan Academy supports all Early Career Teachers through the Expert Teacher Programme, which is a 6 year training and development programme to support and challenge colleagues from ECT to M6. It is based on John Hattie’s research – ‘Distinguishing between experience and expertise.’ It is an established training programme at Macmillan Academy and has seen excellent outcomes in retaining staff in years 1 to 6 of their teaching careers.
The ethos of the programme is to build professional capital and to ensure that when teachers have completed the 6 years of training they will be able to deliver day to day high quality lessons, have a track record of examination results, give effective and regular feedback which promotes student progress, have a positive rapport with students, parents and staff, have a constant drive to improve their practice, take on additional responsibilities, have the ability to mentor and coach others and can collaborate successfully with colleagues.
The programme includes an extensive ECT induction programme centred around the Teaching Standards and ‘Early Career Framework’ and our academy teaching model ‘OPTIC’. The ECT 2 training programme builds on the ECT year and years 3 to 6 of the expert teacher programme work to refine teaching and learning, to consolidate training and to ensure the building and nurturing of professional capital. The last 4 years of this bespoke training programme are based on comprehensive academic research which is the cornerstone of our OPTIC teaching
