On Thursday 15th October, our Year 10, 12 and 13 Art and Textiles students visited The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle for an inspiring day of artistic exploration, practical workshops and first-hand research.
Students had the opportunity to explore the museum’s impressive collections of fine art, historic textiles, fashion and decorative arts, studying works from different centuries and gathering inspiration for their own projects. Highlights included the iconic Silver Swan and artworks by renowned artists such as Canaletto and Goya.
Our Year 10 art students took part in artist-led workshops, experimenting with mark making and texture through charcoal studies. They worked collaboratively on large-scale pieces before creating individual drawings using charcoal, watercolour pencils and chalk. Meanwhile, textiles students enjoyed a silk printing workshop and explored the galleries, sketching intricate patterns and decorative details to inspire their studio work.
For our Year 12 and 13 artists, the visit provided an opportunity to develop their personal projects through focused research. Students explored a wide range of themes, including remembrance, mythology, architecture, portraiture, theatre, nature and landscapes. They produced detailed observational drawings and visited the museum’s Impressions of Light exhibition, featuring works by Monet, Boudin and Courbet.
The visit was a fantastic opportunity for students across all three year groups to experience artwork first-hand, develop their practical skills and discover new sources of inspiration beyond the classroom.
A huge thank you to The Bowes Museum team for welcoming our students and providing such an engaging experience. We look forward to seeing how their research and experiences influence their creative work over the coming months!
