Our Year 11 geography students recently visited Seaton Carew to take part in a range of fieldwork activities that will help develop their knowledge and provide valuable data for their GCSE studies and final assessments.
The sand dunes at Seaton Carew are of both national and international importance due to their rare wildlife, unique calcareous habitat (an environment rich in calcium, often created by shell fragments within the sand), and their vital role as a natural coastal defence against erosion and flooding.
During the visit, students collected a range of geographical data, including measurements of dune height, dune profiles, vegetation coverage and species distribution. They also explored how coastal processes shape the landscape and the importance of protecting these fragile environments.
This hands-on experience allowed students to apply classroom theory to a real-world setting, gaining practical fieldwork skills while deepening their understanding of coastal environments.
