- Mental Health & Wellbeing
Mental health refers to your emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how you think, feel, and behave in everyday life—and it also affects how you handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions. It’s a key part of overall health, just like physical health.
At Macmillan Academy, we are committed to promoting positive mental health and emotional wellbeing for all. We want all stakeholders to pursue healthy lives.
Curriculum Coverage
As part of our commitment to promoting positive mental health and emotional wellbeing, all Key Stage 3 and 4 students cover a wide range of topics during PSHE sessions.
Student Support
For students experiencing mental health difficulties, the academy offers a wide range of support and resources. Students are guided towards the most appropriate support pathway to meet their individual needs. These may include:
- Student Support Base — a quiet and supportive space for students experiencing difficulties.
- Learning Support Base — tailored support for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
- A variety of wellbeing and self-esteem programmes delivered by the intervention team.
- One-to-one and group support provided by our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant following a referral process.
- One-to-one support provided by our Emotional Wellbeing Practitioner, through Schools in Mind, following a referral process.
- Support from InsideOut through regular huddle meetings with key staff.
- The academy also signposts pupils and families to local organisations and specialist services where appropriate, including Kooth, The Bungalow Partnership, Hart Gables and The Junction.
Support for Families
For students experiencing difficulties, there are a number of different organisations that can provide support including Family Hubs, Kooth, Young Minds, Anna Freud and the NHS – Every Mind Matters.
For more information please view the mental health and wellbeing resources for children and young people and our mental health policy
Kooth
Kooth is an online platform to help young people with their mental health and wellbeing. It is a free service that provides safe, anonymous online support for young people. Young people can anonymously talk to other people their own age on moderated discussion forums, and chat to mental health professionals via messaging.
Kooth is a BACP-accredited digital mental health service and is available to young people throughout term time and the school holidays.
Inside Out
Inside Out is name for the Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland Mental Health Support Team. The aim of this team is to ensure that children and young people can access appropriate support to stay in education.
The Inside Out team support Macmillan Academy by helping us to deliver the ‘whole school’ approach to mental health and wellbeing. They support children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues.
HeadStart
HeadStart promotes children and young people’s emotional wellbeing in schools, at home, in the community and online. The aim is to improve the emotional resilience of young people.
Macmillan Academy is a Head Start Gold Award school. We work with the team at Head Start to ensure that we enable young people to be able to cope in difficult circumstances.
There are many things that impact on the emotional well-being of children; falling out with friends, the pressures of social media, keeping up with studies. We want all our pupils to have good emotional health, to have the skills and confidence to cope, solve problems, achieve well and be happy.
Headstart is a whole school approach where everyone feels safe and comfortable to be themselves, learn and develop in a positive environment and access support when needed.
