Macmillan Academy is an 11-19 school and sixth form in Middlesbrough. It is part of Endeavour Academies Trust. At Macmillan we believe in the transformative power of education for all of our young people. Our motto ‘inspiring students to succeed’ is at the heart of what we do; we want our students to achieve and succeed academically but we also want them to succeed personally. It is our aim to ensure that all students have access to a wide range of experiences so that they leave us as well-qualified, well-rounded young people ready to make their mark on the world.
Alongside our students our staff are our greatest asset. Staff retention is exceptionally high and staff wellbeing is a priority for leaders at the academy. We have staff who always ‘go the extra mile’ for students and are always supportive of each other. We have a comprehensive training programme so that all staff can develop in their time with us.Â
Follow us on our social media to stay up to date with all the exciting things that are going on within our academy.
Our students took part in the Middlesbrough Schools competition at Eston Sports Centre, competing in a range of track and field events.
Y7 girls placed 3rd, with strong performances from Tabby and Tabitha. Y8 girls finished 2nd, led by standout efforts from Evie and Amiera.
Y7 boys earned silver thanks to excellent performances from Theo and Qadir.
Y8 boys also finished joint 2nd, with Sonny impressing on the track and Devon in the field.
We’re awaiting confirmation on qualification for the next round. All students showed excellent attitude and behaviour throughout. Our Y10 sports leaders also did a great job officiating on the day.

A select group of students took part in this year’s National Language Competition, a virtual challenge designed for teams of 13–14 year olds across the UK. Throughout the week, our students tackled a range of language-based puzzles, building their problem-solving skills and discovering their own aptitude for languages.
The competition, run annually by GCHQ, aims to inspire a passion for language learning, with overall winners invited to GCHQ’s headquarters in Cheltenham to receive their trophy. We are proud of our students’ enthusiasm and commitment during this year’s competition.

On Monday 17 November, we welcomed Lara Bell-Sayers from Living Woods North East to the academy. She met with our Eco-Council to discuss our Seeds2Trees project and explore potential careers in forestry and project management. Lara also supported students in planting several of our oak saplings that had entered dormancy, and checked in on the alder saplings we are growing on site.
Kester (Y8), representing the Eco-Squad, was presented with a certificate in recognition of our fundraising efforts for the project.

Year 7 spent the week focusing on Anti-Bullying Week and the Power of Good during their tutorial sessions. They’ve created thoughtful displays and posters to help ensure their tutor rooms feel like safe spaces where every student can speak up and feel supported. Well done to all involved.

It has been a busy start to the year for our Y8 sports teams, representing the academy in football, rugby, and indoor cricket. This term brings sports hall athletics, cross country, and more indoor cricket. December also features key football cup fixtures, with the B team meeting Hurworth on the 5th in the ESFA Cup and the A team hosting Egglescliffe on the 10th in the county cup. A reminder that attendance at Monday night enrichment is required for team selection.
