The Way Ahead at 14

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport is designed for students who enjoy sport and are considering a future career in a sports-related industry.  This two year vocational course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success further study or in future employment.

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport is worth 4 GCSEs. It requires study across two option blocks, and you will be awarded a pass, merit or distinction grade. An overall pass grade is equivalent to 4 grade Cs at GCSE, a merit grade is worth equivalent to 4 grade Bs and a distinction is equivalent to 4 grade As.

Course structure

You will study a variety of different topics through the 6 units titled:

  1. Unit 1: The Body in Sport
  2. Unit 2: Health, Safety and Injury
  3. Unit 3: Sports Industry
  4. Unit 4: Preparation for Sport
  5. Unit 5: Planning and Leading Sports Activities
  6. Unit 6: Practical Sport

Additional Qualifications

You will be given an opportunity to gain additional awards. In Year 10 you will work towards achieving a Level 1 Award in Lifestyle Management. This award is a recognised qualification in the sports industry and will give you a foundation to go on and complete a Level 2 Award in Fitness Instructing.  In Year 11 you can gain a Junior Sports Leader Award and Junior Football Organisers Award.

Who is the course for?

BTEC Level 2 Diploma offers a specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the sports sector and is therefore ideally suited to those of you who wish to pursue a career in sports related industries. This course would suit you if you are interested in the industry of sport and are able to work continually towards achieving coursework based tasks.

Assessment

This course is assessed entirely through coursework.  Each unit is completed through a series of mini-assignments that take the form of practical, written, research and presentation tasks.

Directions at 16

The BTEC Level 2 Diploma leads you directly onto a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Sport which is a very popular and successful course offered at Macmillan Academy and many other colleges.  You may also choose to study A Level Physical Education as an alternative or in addition.  If you choose to study sport at Macmillan Academy you will be given the opportunity to achieve a wide range of recognised sports qualifications

 

Routes after Post 16

Many students have gone on to study a degree in Sport Science or Sports Studies at a range of universities. Other students have pursued employment on leaving the Academy and have used the wide range of qualifications gained through the BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Sport programme to support them in their applications.  Career opportunities in health and fitness are wide ranging from instructors/coaches to complementary health practitioners.  Combining with a maths and/or science ‘A’ Level could lead to a career in sports physiotheraphy, sports psychology, or you could become a chiropractor or podiatrist.
