The way ahead at 14

The New GCSE in Physical Education provides you with an exciting opportunities to lead a healthy and active lifestyle by choosing from a variety of roles and activities in which to participate in physical activity.

The content of the GCSE Physical Education specification is designed to enable you to enjoy and understand the benefits of living a healthy and active lifestyle.

The design of the course provides flexibility to suit your skills and intentions.  The practical element, worth 60%, is not restricted to solely assessing practical performance but open to the roles of organiser, coach/leader, choreographer and official.  Thus, if you have a particular strength in a specific activity, you can adopt a variety of roles within that activity to be assessed in.  Assessment will include the analysis of performance and methods for improvement in one activity/role.

The theoretical content delivered helps you to gain an understanding of how the body and mind work to produce effective performance in sport.  It also reflects the social and cultural influences and will look at the influence of modern technology in sport, the media, sponsorship and the Olympic Games. 

picTo develop all round practical ability and key skills, you will take part in a multitude of activities and adopt a variety of roles, including coaching and officiating.  You will also have the opportunity to use our specialist Outdoor Education facilities and equipment to be assessed in activities such as climbing and hill walking and camp craft.  Such assessments require you to go offsite and on overnight expeditions.  These experiences are enjoyable and very rewarding and provide a suitable challenges, both physically and mentally. 

Assessment:

The weighting of assessment in GCSE Physical Education is split 40% theory and 60% practical

Theory assessment will take the form of a written examination paper structured using:

  • Multiple choice questions
  • Short answer questions
  • Questions based on pre-released scenario

Practical assessment consists of four controlled assessments. You choose 2 activities from:

  • Games,
  • Gymnastics,
  • Dance,
  • Athletics,
  • Life Saving,
  • Personal Survival in Swimming and Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Fitness and Health.

At least 2 of these assessments must be as player/performer.  You can include the roles of

  • Player/performer,
  • Organiser,
  • Leader/coach,
  • Choreographer,
  • Official

Way ahead at 16

GCSE Physical Education provides a route to further study such as A Levels and the new Diplomas, and to Higher Education in PE as well as to related career opportunities.

Routes after Post 16

GCSE Physical Education is a subject that is a good starting block for leading into careers such as:

  • Physical Education teaching
  • Sports coaching
  • Sports development
  • Physiotherapy
  • Royal Air Force / Navy / Army
  • Police / Fire Brigade / Ambulance service
  • Sports rehabilitation
  • Dietician
  • Nutritionist
  • Many more sports related fields
