Media Studies

The way ahead at 14

Media Studies continually changes just as the media around us evolves and changes. Throughout the course you will study a range of current Media texts from various media platforms such as television, film, advertising, magazines, websites and computer games. This makes the course ideal for candidates who enjoy analysing texts, who are keen followers of the latest developments in media technology and those who enjoy creating their own media products. If this sounds like you, then this is right option to choose!

picThe course is structured to develop your theoretical knowledge of the subject as well as your analytical and production skills.

In Unit 1, ‘Investigating the Media’, you will be externally assessed (40% of overall grade) on your knowledge and understanding; your research planning and presentation skills as well as your production and evaluation skills.

In Unit 2, ‘Understanding the Media’, you are internally assessed (60% of overall grade) on three assignments designed to support and develop your knowledge and skills. These pieces will allow you to use a range of resources, such as digital cameras and Photoshop, to create your own media texts.

At Post 16 we offer AS/A2 Levels in English Language, English Literature, Media Studies, and Language and Literature combined.  All these courses develop analytical skills and your own critical writing, greatly expanding your understanding beyond GCSE. The work is extremely varied; you will have the opportunity to study texts in detail, to produce original writing and to visit the theatre or a TV studio. Again, your final grades will result from both examinations and coursework.
