Life skills

The Macmillan Academy Lifeskills course is designed to help you prepare for the
challenges of later life.  We develop personal organisation, communication, goal setting and problem-solving skills which are essential for the workplace.  We look to raise your self-esteem and confidence, providing a variety of different environments and opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

Our Lifeskills programme at Key Stage 4 combines excitement, challenge and adventure and makes a clear connection between learning and achievement.

The course details:
The course uses the ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness as an umbrella award which encompasses many smaller modular courses.  The main courses underneath the umbrella are Edexcel WorksSkills Award, ASDAN International Short Courses Award, ASDAN Personal Finance Award and the ASDAN Experience of Work Award Short course.  If you successfully complete all the certificates, it will equal 2 ½ GCSEs at grade C.

Course Assessment:
This course is assessed entirely through coursework.  Each of the modules is completed through a variety of assignments.

A cross section of the course activities:
The course uses many offsite experiences to help promote your learning and achievement such as; Bank and Building Society visits, working closely with Connexions to guide you in terms of career pathways, experiencing a variety of challenging outdoor environments in and around the local area, using visits to London and Edinburgh to broaden horizons and medical mornings to learn about local health providers.

What will the course prepare me for?

The course will give you the confidence to deal with the challenges which are faced by 16 year-olds in today’s society.  It will help prepare you for employment or work-based training or for those who want to, to progress onto a vocational college course.

What’s great about this course?

This course is great because it allows you to build on your own skills at your own pace in a small class. While you are learning, you will have fun visiting new places and trying lots of new activities. You will have support in and out of classroom if you need it and you will develop the self confidence needed to try vocational options and a work placement to help you make realistic choices about your future.
