Drama

The way ahead at 14

This is a creative course that gives you the opportunity to gain a GCSE in the devising, performing and evaluating of Drama.  GCSE Drama follows on from work done at Key Stage 3 but allows you to develop improvisation and acting skills to a higher level.  You will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the Medium and Elements of Drama and theatre genre, as well as put the work you create in an historical, social, and cultural context. To extend your skills, you will observe professionals in practice during regular theatre visits.

This highly practical and creative course consists of:

  • One practical workshop supported by written evidence, which demonstrates
a response to the devising process (30% of overall grade).
  • A second workshop exploring a play text, accompanied by written evidence and a live theatre review (30% of overall grade - Assessment by class teacher)
  • A group performance to an audience which may be either devised or scripted (40% of overall grade - Assessment by visiting examiner)

Directions at 16

When you move into Post 16 education you could progress to 'A' level Drama and Theatre Studies.  You will have the opportunity to study theatre history, explore plays through the theories of selected practitioners and take part in a number of performances.

Routes after Post 16

'A' levels in this subject area would give you the qualifications to apply to recognised Drama Schools and Universities to study at degree level. The confidence, creativity and communication skills you develop whilst studying Drama will prove useful in many careers, not only those linking directly to the Performing Arts.  Jobs requiring ‘people skills’ is particularly important in retail, sales, marketing, travel and tourism.
