Citizenship
At Macmillan Academy, Citizenship is taught to all students in both key stages in a weekly lesson.
The Importance of Citizenship
Education for Citizenship equips you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to play an effective role in public life. Citizenship encourages you to take an interest in topical and controversial issues, debating and discussing them fully. An active role in school, community and society in general is developed.
The Way ahead at 14
Work commenced in earlier years is developed further with three key concepts:
- Democracy and Justice
- Rights and responsibilities
- Identities and diversity
Evaluating information, making informed judgements and reflecting on local and global issues forms part of the programme.
This is all based around a GCSE syllabus with you tackling a piece of Controlled Assessment work and a final written examination
Routes after 16
Helping you to become informed, critical, active citizens who have the confidence and conviction to work collaboratively, taking action and making a difference in your world is the primary aim.
PSHE
Additional specialist involvement is employed for the benefit of the students in areas such as Sex and Relationship Education and Drugs Education.
Conclusion
The overriding purpose of the weekly Citizenship lesson is to develop social and moral responsibility, community involvement and political literacy, thus preparing students for a fully active adult life.
