GCSE Geography

GeographyGCSE Geography is an issues-based course covering twelve units. Students investigate modern day issues to understand their causes and characteristics, the impact and consequences involved and the strategies to effectively manage them. In our rapidly changing world this understanding of what is happening and why is vital. For example, what are the consequences of global climate change? How are our towns and cities changing? How can our existing energy resources be better managed?

The course covers three modules over the two years.

  1. Managing change in the Human Environment.
This looks at global population issues and at the problems created by rapid population changes.
  2. Managing change in the Physical Environment.
Our world is full of natural hazards that often impact on people's lives. How do we cope with volcanoes, earthquakes and floods? How can all the world's people hope to get enough food and water?
  3. Managing Economic Development.
What is meant by the term 'development' and why are some countries so much richer than others? How can we use what we have sustainably without polluting our world?

You will have the opportunity to complete fieldwork based in the Yorkshire Dales. The course covers three modules over the two years. As well as being an interesting and relevant subject in its own right, the skills learnt as part of GCSE Geography, are useful 'life skills'. Students studying Geography can find things out for themselves, can use maps, graphs and statistics, work with others, problem solve and analyse. This leads to careers in many different areas.
