Year 7 Girls 5 a-side Tournament
Year 7 Football Match Report v Conyers
Macmillan are in the hat for Round 4 of the National Cup after a hard fought game victory against Conyers School.
Macmillan started exceptionally well and put the visitors under a great deal of pressure during the opening exchanges. They were unlucky not to have taken the lead with Robert Clark, Jake Symmonds and Joe Rouse all coming close.
As the half wore on Conyers started to get back in the game although the back line of Jake Smith, Taylor Boyd-Stephenson, Adam Campbell and Conner Harris gave goalkeeper Sam Hurst a great deal of protection and rarely was he tested.
The home side deservedly took the lead just before the interval, when Robert Clark finished well after great work from Captain Charlie O’Hara.
Half-time Macmillan 1 Conyers 0
Conyers started the second half much better and began to create a couple of chances. To try and combat this a tactical change was made with Lewis Bell moving from midfield to attack to help support Jake Symmonds who was looking a little tired after working really hard during the first half.
The change appeared to have done the trick when with 20 minutes remaining the home side doubled their lead when Clark fired home once more. However, a powerful Conyers were not done just yet and they pulled one back with a good strike from the edge of the penalty area. This rattled the Macmillan lads and Conyers quickly followed this up with another goal after the home side failed to clear from a goal mouth scramble.
The home side now looked tired and the home fans feared the worst. Nonetheless, with just 10 minutes remaining Macmillan took the lead once more when that man Clark scored a wonderful individual goal to earn his hat-trick. Macmillan now clearly had the grit between their teeth and when Jake Symmonds headed home a corner it appeared to be all over.
Credit to Conyers they would not give up and after scoring a third goal it led to a very tense closing 5 minutes. Conyers then hit the post before Clark was put through by O’Hara and he beat 3 defenders before slamming the ball home to make it 5-3. In the dying stages Conyers scored once more, before referee Ryan Pugh (former student) blew the full-time whistle.
Man of the match award was Robert Clark after his stunning 4 goal show but also special mention to Jake Smith who defended superbly well.

Y7 Girls Football – Middlesbrough School Tournament
Middlesbrough Schools Y7 Girls Football Tournament
On Monday 10th October 14 year 7 Girls Footballers took part in a 6 a-side tournament at Goals with Macmillan entering two teams. The tournament had a very strong turn out with six schools entering teams and this meant the girls faced some very strong opponents.
The B team showed fantastic determination and team-work whilst facing Acklam Grange ‘A’, Ormesby and Kings Academy in the group stage. With this being the first time the girls had played official matches together the tournament was a challenge from the start. The girls gained three points from their matches and finished 4th within their group. They should be proud of their achievement and the way they conducted themselves on and off the pitch.
The A team faced Oakfields, Trinity and Acklam Grange ‘B’ in their group stage. The girls were fantastic from the off showing brilliant strength and determination to win every ball and every game, and that they did. They won all three of their matches finishing top of the group and moved on into the semi-finals where they faced the runners up of Group A. The girls went into this game with high spirits from their previous wins but still with the knowledge that they had to give 100%. They were brilliant during the game and went on to beat Ormesby 5-0 with Grace Jackson being the top goals scorer. The girls had now reached the final and butterflies had started to whirl but Niamh Richardson (c) was on hand to give her team a great talk beforehand. The final whistle was blown with the teams drawing 1-1 and they entered a 3 minute golden goal situation. No team managed to score during those three minutes so both teams nervously faced penalties. Haleema Khushi made some excellent saves during the strikes but unfortunately the girls lost 1-0 and were handed the award for Runners Up. I am massively proud of their achievement, their efforts and how well they represented themselves and the Academy!
Well Done to All!!

Macmillan v Sandhill View (2nd round of National Cup)
It nearly didnt happen, it was touch and go on whether we would travel to the game, however, a windy evening in Sunderland proved to be filled with excitement!!! After going 2-0 down after a few minutes, it didnt look good. However, through hardwork and determination we kept our heads up and scored 2 in quick succession (Crackell and Dawson). We then took the lead in the second half (3-2, Crackell). It was looking like a win but with minutes to go Sandhill equalised. Extra time was to be played (5mins each way, felt like forever), again we took the lead with 2 minutes (Dawson) to go Dawson got injured so we had to play with 9!! At this point it was an absolute nail biter, the win was in our grasp…..then they equalised AGAIN (oh no). Penalties was the decider, where we won 3-2.
The faces of our team when Hesse saved that last penner was class, it was by far the best game of football ive seen my girls play, a VERY proud moment. Thanks girls, you were unbelievable. Cant wait till the next round.
Hesse, Foster, McMahon, Weedall, Beddard, Lees, Owens, Dawson, Crackell, Stockdale – WELL DONE!
Glad i was a part of it, cheers Mrs Richardson

Year 8 Rugby
On Thursday 6th October Macmillan Academy attended the Middlesbrough School rugby tournament at Acklam Rugby Club. The year 8 students have made a good start to the season but have yet to a win a competition, however this tournament was the one the lads really wanted to win. We arrived and immediately got ready to play and it could be seen from the start the lads were up for it.
We were placed in a group with Ormesby, Oakfields and Acklam Grange to try and reach the final. The first game was against an Ormesby team that had played little rugby, due to this the game was scrappy first half and all the team start to look for personal glory and taking the ball on a little too much. Despite this Macmillan led at the break 2-0 on tried. At half time we decided to stop taking the ball to far and try to play more expansive rugby, from the start the Macmillan students play much better and spreading the ball wide managed to add another 4 unanswered tries before Ormesby got a consolation right at the death, final score 6-1.The second game was against Oakfield will be remembered for a number of our players not remembering where the try line was and butching two clear tries by running over the end of the pitch without putting the ball down. However the Macmillan side proved to strong in the tackle and running straight and finished the game 6-0 winners.
Our final group game to go through to the final was against Acklam Grange, we have had mixed fortune against this team in the past and the current standing was won one, lost two in previous meetings. However the Macmillan team were really up for the game and wanted to make the final more than anything. Macmillan started really well and moved the ball from one side of the pitch to the other, making the acklam grange team work very hard in defence. The hard work was paid off when Macmillan managed to score late in the first half to make it 1-0 to Macmillan. After half time Acklam Grange came back strong looking to equalise, but the Macmillan defence helf firm, with some excellent tackling from the likes of Connor Carling, Conor McNally and Hassan Ghafoor. All the hard work from the students paid off when they claimed two more tries to make the score 3-0. Late towards the end of the game Acklam Grange managed to squeeze past the defence but it was too little too late and Macmillan claimed the game 3-1.
The final of the competition was due to be played against Conyers but sadly time for the evening had ran out and the Acklam Pitch was due to be used by other people. However the Year 8 Macmillan Rugby team will play Conyers for the Middlesbrough schools title under flood lights at Acklam Rugby Club on Wednesday 9th November.

U16 Hockey v Ryehills
Well done to the U16 girls hockey team for their excellent performance against Ryehills on Tuesday. After being stuck in a traffic jam and being over half an hour late the girls missed out on a proper warm up and pre match practice and a well prepared Ryehills team dominated the first half. A strong defence led by Ellie Russon and Johanna Walker ensured that Ryehills could not get a shot on target and a couple of strong clearences set Laura Foster off on her runs down the right wing. Laura dominated the right hand side of the pitch taking on many a player to hit ball after ball into the D and after a couple of misses Charlie Walsh managed to fire one home!
Macmillan maintained their strong attacking and defensive performance in the 2nd half and despite having a couple more chances they could not hit the backboard. The game finished 1-0 and is an excellent start to the County League. Man of the Match was Laura Foster with Mrs Alderson also picking Ellie Russon out for her exceptional performance. Well done girls!
