Each year staff and students at Macmillan join with others across the nation in taking time to reflect and mark the act of remembrance for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country with a special internally televised broadcast.

Normal lessons are suspended for a ten minute period. All staff and students watch the programme which concludes with a minute's silence at 11am, the time at which the guns fell silent on the battlefields marking the end of WW1.

This year see’s the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and provides an opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the battle, to reflect upon the human cost of conflict and to have hope for a more peaceful world.

The academy recently visited Beamish Museum to record and film this year’s broadcast. The focus of our film tells the story of four young men their partners and family as they prepared for and fought in the Battle of the Somme. Sadly our story reflects the reality of WW1 and outcome that many of the young men who fought would not return home.

Please take time to view this year's broadcast
