The academy was delighted to welcome two successful authors in November who helped inspire our students with their own reading and writing.

Stephen Kelman visited on Thursday 12th November. His book Pigeon English is on the AQA GCSE English syllabus and was shortlisted for the 2011 Man Booker Prize. He met Year 10 students and spent time reading from Pigeon English then participating in a short interview on stage with Jason Vit from the National Literacy Trust, in which they discussed Stephen's background and his route to becoming an author. This was the followed by a question and answer session for the students and some book signing. Literacy Co-ordinator Mr Reed said, 'As students listened to Stephen's journey from an inner-city council estate to a best-selling author, they were inspired to believe that they too possess the potential to become writers. Students related to Stephen's idea of "getting unheard voices heard" and about the importance of reading books that portray life outside of the mainstream of society.'

Tommy Donbavand visited on Tuesday 17th November. Tommy has written over 80 books including the Scream Street series which is now being shown on CBBC, the Fang Vampire Series and also a Dr Who novel Shroud of Sorrow. He presented 4 'Dr Who' workshops during the day for Year 7 and Year 8 students in which he helped them to create their own science fiction stories. The students found this very entertaining and inspiring and Tommy found himself extremely popular at lunch time and break time, when he spent time talking to students and signing books in the library.
