All students and staff at the academy celebrated World Book Day by participating in a 'Drop Everything and Read' campaign. Students and staff were given the opportunity to complete sustained silent reading every day during morning registration. Year 8 and 9 students and tutors also read during their year group assembly.

Literacy Coordinator Mr Reed, set up the event to help remind students about the importance of reading for pleasure on a daily basis. Various studies have shown that students who complete at least 30 minutes of daily reading perform much better in all their subjects when compared to their peers who do not read.

The campaign was a huge success with the library setting a new record for the number of loans in a week. Year 7 tutor Mrs Slater reported, ' I thought it was a great idea. I loved being able to have a relaxing start to my day. The students also really enjoyed it'. Meanwhile, Year 11 tutor Mrs Rose stated, 'I loved it. Twenty minutes of heaven in my book'. Finally, Year 12 student Heather McGowan said, 'I like having the time to explore academic journals in order to gain a deeper understanding of my chosen subjects'.

To help embed the successes of the reading campaign, Mr Reed aims to run another 'Drop Everything and Read' campaign after Easter. In the meantime, students should ensure that they maintain a routine of completing 30 minutes independent reading every day.
