The Academy is proud to report that our Geography department is one of only 10 schools nationwide to join the elite group of those gaining the Centre of Excellence Secondary Geography Quality Mark.

We are delighted to announce a further curricular success for the Academy. The geography department is one of only 10 schools nationwide to join the elite group of those gaining the Centre of Excellence Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM).

Following a rigorous moderation process the team of assessors were hugely impressed by the manner in which the staff were embracing innovative approaches to teaching geography.

With the use of i-pads at Key Stage 4 there is the option of using apps – Earth Viewer to investigate the Earth's formation and i Quake and Disaster Alert to study tectonic hazards.

The department staff work with the Ordnance Survey to deliver workshop training in the use of digimaps which was attended by local primary school teachers.

The learning outside the classroom has increased with more field work both in the academy grounds and the local area and geographical ambassadors in lessons feedback about what they enjoy to inform future lesson planning.

These new techniques adopted in the lesson and the wider curriculum are inspiring young people and providing them with the knowledge and understanding they need to live in the modern world.

Student take up of the subject at both GCSE and A level is high and there is evidence that the new approaches are improving department results.
