During the first week of the bookend fortnight the Year 8 students took part in a number of activities designed to instil an interest in nature and the natural world. The activities included bug hunting, willow weaving and bird box building to allow the students to discover and develop the skills to create homes for nature in their local area. They learned about the importance of biodiversity and the possible negative results from a decrease in biodiversity. A river walk to Tees barrage enabled the students to learn about local natural areas of which they were previously unaware. The students also considered the causes and effects of climate change by creating ice sculptures and producing observational drawings as the warm temperatures took their toll.
