Did you wonder what a 25 ft rocket was doing outside the dining room? Students in Middlesbrough have been working together looking at careers in Science.

Did you wonder what a 25 ft rocket was doing outside the dining room?

Over the past year schools in Middlesbrough have been working together to bring Year 8 students in contact with real scientists. The science departments from Macmillan, Ormesby, Hall Garth, Trinity and UCA, together known as Middlesbrough Triple Science Group, have taken turns in hosting fun science events for about 60 students. This means that only about a dozen from each school have been able to attend each event. On Wednesday 3rd March, Macmillan hosted the final event, which was the biggest and best of all.

The theme for the day was Where Science Can Take Me. Two hundred and ten students, plus their teachers, took part in four events throughout the day. Most of the students were from the group of five secondary schools but we also invited year 6s from 12 local primary schools. The students made rocket powered cars, made a necklace out of their own DNA, showed teamwork in building a model compressor out of Jenga blocks and, for some, the highlight was a traditional "bangs and smells" science demonstration about rocket power. We look forward to hosting similar events in the future.
