During National Apprenticeship Week, Macmillan Academy took a group of Year 10 students to the Hartlepool Power Plant, EDF Energy. Here students explored electricity in a nuclear power plant. They learnt how electricity is generated and gained a full site tour which included the Turbine Hall, two electromagnetic generators, the Cooling Pump House and the emergency stations.

We were inspired by meeting current apprentices, as they discussed the EDF Energy apprenticeship recruitment process and the careers available there. A former Macmillan Academy student talked passionately about his career and how he is being encouraged, both academically and practically, to succeed within nuclear engineering.

A trip to the Teesmouth Field Centre ended the day, where we looked at environmental improvements and enviro-scientific careers, which are available locally.
