How does our Training School support others?
Outreach work is an important element of our Training School’s work. Our involvement with initial teacher training is a key component of this work and we try to offer trainees a positive experience during their placement in Macmillan.
To encourage people into the teaching profession and give future teachers a taste of the school environment we are keen to open our doors. We engage with the Student Associate Scheme which places perspective teachers, who are currently undergraduates, in schools for 15 days. They are given a realistic experience which helps them decide on whether teaching is an appropriate profession for them to pursue. Currently Macmillan has several teachers who began their careers with us on the Student associate Scheme.
Macmillan Academy and Brathay have worked with Carmel RC College, Leeds West Academy and Oakfields Community School to create a bespoke course for our middle and aspirant Heads of Department and Heads of Year. The programme is designed to encourage shared practice and develop our managers’ skills at coaching their staff and inspire best practice.
This year Macmillan Academy is involved in a joint PD day with our local authority where the aim is to share good practice across departments. Macmillan is hosting the Science and English training. We also invited staff from local primary and secondary schools, Carmel RC College and Leeds West Academy to our annual Teaching and Learning Conference.
Our NQT training programme includes an intensive three day course on Teaching and Learning, which was attended by our own NQTs as well as NQTs from Leeds west Academy and Oakfields Community School.
Through our links with the TDA and the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust Macmillan have supported various schools and academies; offering consultations, visits, advisory meetings, presentations etc. Macmillan has also offered an advisory role in the development of the specialised engineering diploma.
