Training School
Training Schools are centres of excellence for training and development. It is part of our agenda to support the whole school workforce by providing a balance of personalised and relevant training programmes which model good practice and complement the strong teaching and learning ethos of our academy.
As a training school, Macmillan tries to demonstrate a training experience which goes beyond that expected of a well-managed institution. We run a Teacher Effective Enhancement Programme (TEEP) for our teaching staff; offer an enriching NQT induction programme which builds support in NQT+1 and +2; have an innovative INSET programme to support our TEEP training, provide training for our teaching assistants with a clear route to HLTA status, support our staff with innovative and comprehensive intranet resources based in the TEEP teaching and learning model and offer our staff dedicated Wednesday afternoon training time within departments.
For Macmillan Academy, being a training school has meant we have been able to link our interest in developing teaching and learning with our drive on training. Our Teaching and Learning Group exemplifies our interest in the art of teaching and science of learning they meet regularly and have helped put discourse on teaching and learning into an open and active forum. Currently they are running a research project on independent learning. For many of our staff developing their own learning is important we support them on their journey of life long learning by assisting the financially with BA, MA and GCSE modules and exams.
The Academy has developed strong links with initial teacher training providers (ITT) foremost the Middlesbrough SCITT which is based in our own academy. Macmillan is keen to promote teaching as a career and we work with a range of Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) such as Durham, York, Sunderland, the Open University and the Graduate Teacher Programme. We consider the experience of mentoring trainees an excellent CPD opportunity for our staff. In addition we support the Student Associate Scheme and Open School programme. Macmillan is also a designated QTS Skills Centre (for further information use the TDA Skills Tests website.
