Outdoor Learning impact

The outstanding curriculum has a range of innovative features which meets the needs of all students exceptionally well… together with the extensive provision for outdoor learning, is a special feature of the academy.

Ofsted

Outdoor learning works because adventure and challenge inspire. This is a deep learning
experience, it is learning that lasts a lifetime.

Director of Outdoor Learning

Enjoyment

Students enjoy outdoor learning and adopt a positive attitude to challenge and adventure. At Macmillan Academy we are clear that enjoyment of learning has the capacity to raise achievement.

Confidence

Students gain in personal confidence through taking on challenges and achieving success. A powerful moment is when a student reaches a realisation that they can achieve.

Mental Toughness

Students increase their capacity to deal effectively with stress, pressures and challenges and perform to the best of their abilities irrespective of the circumstances in which they find
themselves.

Self-awareness and self-esteem

Students develop their self-awareness, social skills, esteem and their appreciation of the contributions and achievements of others. Students learn, explore, demonstrate, reflect and apply understanding.

Academic Achievement

Outdoor learning has made a positive impact on the GCSE and A Level results for those students opting for outdoor learning as a pathway in the PE curriculum.

Increased motivation and appetite for learning

Students display an increased motivation and appetite for learning. Outdoor learning is
motivational, memorable and meaningful.

Broadened horizons

Students broaden their horizons and become open to a wider range of opportunities and life chances.
