The Centre for Outdoor Learning is the umbrella for the extensive range of outdoor learning facilities at Macmillan Academy. It is an ‘outdoor centre’ with a high standard of equipment, learning resources and dedicated indoor and outdoor teaching space. The centre is supported by a range of partners and organizations providing high quality outdoor learning.

The low and high ropes course provides a range of individual and team challenges. Regarded as one of the fastest routes to increasing self confidence, this unique facility contributes to the ethos of ‘I Can’. The course includes classic elements like trapeze, Jacob’s ladder and crate stack.
The Climbing Centre contains twenty four route corridors and over one hundred graded climbing routes across a range of feature walls. Notable challenges include the slab, the chimney, the overhang and the competition wall. With an outstanding design, all technical equipment provided, ropes in-situ, and routes available for lead climbing, the Climbing Centre is the largest and most extensive climbing wall within any school in the UK.
The Expedition Unit has the ability to provide all the clothing and equipment for a range of educational visits and expeditions. The Unit supports the John Muir Award, Bush Craft, Climbing Club, The Duke of Edinburgh Award and a range of curriculum activities from Geography field studies to GCSE PE Outdoor Adventurous Activity Expeditions.
A dedicated fleet of mountain bikes are maintained by the academy to provide the highest standard of introduction to the sport.
With a focus on sailing, canoeing and surfing using resources on the River Tees and the coast at Saltburn, Macmillan Academy has a number of partner organizations providing high quality technical instruction.
