Changes to Academy Bus Service
Macmillan Academy has operated a very successful bus service over the same routes for many years. Due to changes in the home locations of our students it is essential that we make changes to our routes from September.
We have reviewed the entire bus network with Stagecoach to better suit the needs of all our students. Our objective with this change is to more evenly distribute students and reduce overcrowding.
From 1 September 2009 we will operate a new bus service with routes numbered 301 - 308. You will need to check the new routes and the timings that will apply to your son/daughter. A map has been provided to help with this important change.
Our aim is to provide Academy buses that provide a safe, environmentally friendly and convenient option to travel to the Academy. The journey is convenient as it provides direct services from home to Macmillan Academy. Journey timings are quicker than by normal service bus, particularly on the longer journeys where there is a need to change buses. There is also an assurance that you will get to the Academy safely. This is also in line with government policy to try to discourage the use of cars and single journeys and encourage the use of transport by buses.
Stagecoach
Stagecoach will continue to provide the Academy bus service for students for the academic year 2009/10. The bus company intend to increase charges again this year to cover increasing fuel and operational costs. We have no option than to increase fares. The Academy continues to heavily subsidise the cost of provision absorbing most of the higher prices charged by Stagecoach. The current level of this subsidy is putting Academy finances under strain and will be reviewed in the future.
Costs
For the academic year 2009/10 there will be a standard daily rate applied to all buses, £1.30 single, £2.00 return. There will no longer be a local bus with cheaper fares.
TERMLY BUS PASSES
Average daily costs of a termly pass can be as little as £1.35 to £1.80 per day (compared to the daily return fare of £2.00) depending on distance from the Academy. This could lead to a saving of up to £123.50 per year!
We understand that for some people price is everything this is why termly passes have been calculated to give even more value than before. We are also able to help spread the cost of the pass by allowing phased payments at the start of each term, details are attached.
An application form for a termly bus pass is available on request from Student Services at the Academy. A passport sized photograph is required. Completed applications must be returned to Macmillan Academy no later than Friday 17 July 2009, to ensure that they are processed in time for the Autumn Term.
Bus passes can be collected from the Cashiers office on the first day of each new term. They are not available on demand from Stagecoach.
We are confident that our bus service with Stagecoach continues to provide a safe, cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative to private cars. We will continue to ask for your support in ensuring that journeys to and from the Academy are safe and trouble free.
