The Art, Craft and Design department is housed across four art studios that provide students with the opportunity to explore a broad range of techniques and processes in a spacious light environment.
Students are encouraged to develop their technical skills and experience art first hand in order to inform their own practise and be artists themselves.
The achievements of Macmillan artists are celebrated through the artist of the week accolade and regular exhibitions in the gallery space that runs through the heart of the department.

Students currently study the GCSE Art and Design (unendorsed) awarded by OCR the course enables students to study and explore a broad range of visual arts encompassing painting, sculpture, textiles and photography. In year 10 students experience art and artefacts first hand through an educational visit to inspire their learning and exploration.
In year 11 students gain experience of working under examination conditions through the preparation of a project which concludes with the production of a final piece during a 5 hour mock examination. This prepare them for their Externally set Test (Examination) in the spring which results in a 10 hour time to produce and outcome.
Assessment for GCSE Art and Design unendorsed is as follows;

EXTERNALLY SET TASK |
60% |
40% |
At the end of the course students submit a Portfolio of evidence to submit for formal assessment. The portfolio should represent roughly 45 hours of work and include the best examples from at least two projects. |
The remainder of marks at GCSE come from an Externally Set Task. This is a project set by the examination board. You'll have time to create a body of preparatory work - in a sketchbook or journal before spending 10 hours under examination conditions on a final piece. |
The department offers students the opportunity to study Fine Art and Textiles at ‘AS’ Level and ‘A’ Level awarded by AQA. Many students opt to study both subjects. Students are encouraged to develop their own practise whilst taking part in skills building workshops, artist residences and portfolio enhancing projects.
Experiencing art first hand is at the heart of the department ethos and students are encouraged to visit galleries in their own time as well as on organised study visits.
