Health & Social Care

Health and Social Care is taught at Key Stage 4 and Post 16.

Key Stage 4

Post 16

The course prepares students for careers in a growing care industry. Over the past few years our students have gone on to work as field social workers, gone to university to study for nursing, radiography, criminology and social science degrees, taken work with benefit agencies, as classroom assistants and nursing home care assistants.

The various units of work are taught by experienced professionals in nursing, care, education and life skills.

All Post 16 students do a First Aid course as part of one of their units of work.

All Post 16 students in Health and Social Care undertake work placement throughout the course. There are also other links with outside agencies, care homes, day centres, health promotion units to assist with specific units of work.

Syllabus

Courses offered in this subject are designed to provide a broad education as a basis for either further or higher education (eg diplomas or degrees in nursing, criminology, medical secretary, probation / social work) or for moving into employment, mainly in the wide ranging care field.

This is achieved by ensuring that students develop general skills to enable them to take responsibility for their own learning.

The courses are vocational by nature involving students carrying out their own investigations and enquiries in order to present findings in various ways including written assignments, talks and presentations. This helps in deciding on future career paths.

All BTEC units are coursework based, there are no tests. The units of work studied look at subjects from  equal opportunities and discrimination to Child Development.

The course is enhanced by work placements at appropriate times and in a wide variety of settings.
