About Us

Macmillan Academy opened as Macmillan CTC in 1989 and converted to an academy in September 2007. The academy is a larger than average secondary academy with a large sixth form in central Middlesbrough. We have built a reputation locally for academic success and our GCSE and A-Level results are consistently strong. In our two most recent OFSTED inspections we were judged as ‘Outstanding’ and then ‘Good’. We are determined in driving forward improvement and we aim to provide students with outstanding learning experiences which are both challenging and engaging, enabling them to fulfil their potential.

Moral Purpose

The academy serves a wide catchment across Middlesbrough and the area scores highly on the national deprivation indicator. Our staff understand the background of our students and know that an excellent education can significantly improve their life chances. We have a strong sense of moral purpose and staff regularly demonstrate a willingness to ‘go the extra mile’ for our students. The academy places great emphasis on preparing students for the next phase of their lives and ensure that students who leave us either at 16 or 18 have a positive destination which reflects their potential.

Whole Education

We are committed to the concept of ‘whole education’ and we place great emphasis on promoting responsible citizenship, creating opportunities for students to develop a global mindset and to develop lifelong interests. We aim to create a positive ethos where students are happy, valued and have a sense of belonging. Our broad and varied enrichment programme means that we offer opportunities for all students to foster their unique skills and talents. Students behave very well and are respectful and courteous towards staff and one another.

High Aspirations

Staff at the academy aim to provide students with a wide range of experiences, enabling them to develop skills which will prepare them well for life beyond school. A strong focus is given to employment skills and as a result nearly every student leaving the academy has a path to employment or further studies. We have strong links with former students who support our aims of raising aspirations and we seek to build on and foster new relationships and strategic partnerships which augment the work of the academy.

Stimulating Environment

We have a stimulating and efficient physical environment and our campus has evolved with the needs of our learners to create meaningful and high quality learning spaces, which include purpose- built science laboratories, a film studio, a high specification theatre, two well stocked information centres, dedicated Post 16 facilities and excellent sports facilities, including climbing wall and high/low ropes course and a new full-sized astroturf pitch.

As an organization, we aim to create a working community which is stimulating, safe and successful. As a designated training school, we have developed high quality training for teachers within their first six years of teaching through our ‘Expert Teachers Programme’ and we develop current and potential leaders through our tailor-made leadership training courses. Our teachers are highly valued and we aim to support and develop them to their full potential, fostering a culture of high performance, underpinned by principles of dignity, respect, equality and diversity.

Developing Future Leaders

At Macmillan Academy we are committed to developing future leaders in education. To complement the Expert Teacher Programme we also run leadership training courses aimed at preparing teachers for every step of their leadership career. Our suite of courses caters for aspiring or existing senior leaders. We recognise how challenging leadership can be in the current fast changing education climate, but it is very rewarding and our leadership training aims to help you to fulfil your potential. Many of our existing middle and senior leaders have been ‘home grown’ at Macmillan and have benefited from such courses.
