Outreach work is an important element of our Training School’s work. Our involvement with initial teacher training is a key component of this work and we try to offer trainees a positive experience during their placement in Macmillan. Currently around 30% of the teaching staff at Macmillan have come through the Training School.
To encourage people into the teaching profession and give future teachers a taste of the school environment we are keen to open our doors. We engage with the School Experience Programme which places perspective teachers, who are currently undergraduates, in schools for up to 10 days. They are given a realistic experience which helps them decide on whether teaching is an appropriate profession for them to pursue.
We also run the Teacher Taster Week experience offering an insight into the life of a teacher in a busy secondary school and also many other ad hoc work experience visits.
Our NQT programme includes an intensive three day course on Teaching and Learning which was attended by our own NQTs as well as NQTs from Leeds West Academy and Oakfields Community School.
Our links with Oakfields Community School have meant that we can have a close involvement with the three Teach First teachers at the school. As well as one of our ASTs being based at Oakfields one day per week to assist in training opportunities.
