Welcome to religious education
The Religious Education department is housed in a suite of three main classrooms. There are four full-time teachers and one part time member of staff.
Recent departmental activities to promote Religious Education for the students have included:
- Extra examination experience for Year 11
- Visit to Lindisfarne as part of a module on Pilgrimage
- Visit to a local church to prepare work on denominations
- Visiting speakers from Cleveland Police
- Visiting speaker from Teesside Crematorium
- Visiting speaker from Pregnancy Crisis Centre

Syllabus
Year 7 and 8
In year 7 and 8 the students follow a KS3 syllabus using the Steps in R.E. books published by Stanley Thornes, books 1, 2 and 3. The syllabus is linked to features of the Middlesbrough agreed syllabus.
The syllabus has been reviewed with a view to incorporating elements of the KS3 Foundation strategy and further enhancing the specific features of literacy, SEN etc.
Year7 are taught in mixed ability groups while Year 8 are taught in bands which are setted by their English results. The students have two double lessons a fortnight
Years 9 to 11
In year 9, 10 and 11 students follow AQA syllabus B modules 1 and 4. Specialist staff teach the course in two double lessons a fortnight. The students need to be taught the examination syllabus from year 9 in order to gain sufficient time for both the modules. The students will be entered for an examination for Module 1 in year 10 and module 4 in year 11.
Year 12 and 13
Post 16 students undertake AS and A level religious studies following the AQA syllabus and completing three modules in each phase. The students are taught in eight double lessons a fortnight with one double lesson being allocated as independent study time in the sixth form study centre.

Post 16 Religious Education
If you have studied the Short Course R.E. you will already have an inbuilt link with 'A' Level. This fascinating and challenging course comprises of six individually certificated modules leading to qualifications at both 'AS' and 'A' Level over two years. There are two compulsory modules,one per year, and these have been asterixed.
The unit on 'Philosophy of religion’ will develop areas that you have been introduced to in ‘Thinking about God’ at GCSE.
'AS' Level Modules (first year)
* An introduction to Religious Experience and Authority
- using examples drawn from any of the six major religions. You look at different forms of religious experience (conversion, visions etc.).
- You also look at the authority and status of scripture.
Introduction to aspects of a major world faith. This will be Islam and includes:
- Muhammads' career in Mecca and Medina
- The significance of his life and teaching
- The origins of Sunni and Shi'i
- The meaning of 'Muslim' and 'Islam'
- Beliefs about God, Angels, Prophets and Judgement
- The concept of Shirk
- Prayer and fasting in Muslim Life
- Use of Quran in worship and everyday life.
Introduction to Religion and Science
- Religious and scientific understanding of creation
- Miracles
- The Design Argument
'A2' Level Modules (second year)
* Studies in Religion and Human Experience
Three topics to be investigated:
- Religious Experience
- Religious Authority
- Life, Death and beyond
Students will draw upon knowledge and understanding gained throughout the course.
Studies in the Philosophy of Religion
- Arguments for the existence of God
- The problem of Evil
- Nature of Religious Experience
Studies in Religion and Culture
- Islam as a way of life (e.g. use of Sharia)
- Aspects of Religious thought (e.g. the concept of Jihad)
- Islam in Contemporary Society (e.g. Muslims in Britain)
The 'AS' examinations are 1 hour duration
The 'A2' examinations are 1½ hours duration.
