Welcome to Physical education
The department aims to raise the aspirations of young people of all abilities and every social background by educating them to the highest measurable standards by providing them with a varied rich diet of activities and experiences.
The Physical Education Department at Macmillan Academy has a large number of sporting fixtures every week with up to 100 students regularly representing the Academy. The quantity of fixtures played enhances the development of our students both on and off the sports field and allows them to build relationships with staff and students from opposing schools.
The depth of the enrichment programme has allowed students to choose activities that they enjoy participating in and, in some cases, develop into high level performers.

Syllabus
GCSE Physical Education
You will study different methods of training, diet and nutrition, how the body functions during exercise and also the role of sport in society. You will develop your own skills in different sports and your grading in these four sports will count towards your final GCSE grade. There is a theory part to this course and this is where your abilities in writing will help you. Your knowledge of the body in sport, fitness training, health, sport and leisure in general will be tested.
GCSE Physical Education leads directly on to our established 'AS' Level Sport & Physical Education or the BTEC Sport Studies course.
Rugby Academy
Macmillan Academy has a highly competitive Under-19 rugby team which competes in fixtures local and national school competitions. The course allows students to play at a high standard on a regular basis and other players to achieve their full potential.
The Academy has direct links with Acklam, Darlington, Middlesbrough and the Newcastle Falcons Rugby Clubs. The project is also supported by the Excellence in Cities Gifted and Talented programme which aims to raise the standards of the game across Middlesbrough.
The English Schools Rugby Union fully supports the initiative. Tim Stirk, Honorary Team Manager and Vice Chairman of the England Under 16 group is overseeing the project with a view to using the initiative on a nation-wide basis.
Dave Walder, Newcastle Falcons' Fly Half and England International and the Newcastle Falcons' Youth Development Team helped the Academy to launch the Academy on 5 December 2001. Since that time the team has developed from strength to strength, performing well in the Daily Mail National Cup and the Yorkshire Schools Competitions
The project has received a high level of support and sponsorship. K Home Engineering, M&D Travel and Steel River Textiles have all committed themselves to sponsorship deals for the Academy. Financial support from local business will further enhance the quality of the programme on offer.
Macmillan Academy has an excellent academic reputation and will be able to support the players in their studies. Involvement with the Rugby Academy will take up the equivalent amount of time as studying for one AS Level. This will allow players to select 2 or 3 other AS Level courses, the equivalent amount of time for BTECs or such other combinations as players require.
Sport fitness
Macmillan Academy has excellent sports facilities which are well-used by Post-16 students. The Leisure Centre has a large sports hall, a dance studio and an extremely well-equipped fitness room with cardio-vascular machines, weights and everything else you could expect.
You will receive a full induction into the correct use of the equipment. As well as the extensive playing fields, there are also all-weather pitches and hard tennis courts.
Post-16 sports teams compete regularly against other schools and colleges.
