CROSS CURRICULAR - Numeracy

Message from the Numeracy Coordinator

Numeracy is a crucial tool not only for Mathematics lessons but for lessons in other subjects and more importantly for day to day life.

Think of all the times during a day you use numeracy: to tell the time, to see how long have you got left in a lesson, to see if you have got enough money for your lunch/the bus. Without numeracy you would not be able to find out any of these things.

Numeracy is used here at Macmillan throughout the Academy. Several initiatives are in place to ensure students get the most out of numeracy in all subject areas. Many resources have been shared throughout the departments and so for example if History are using percentages they would know how students are taught this in Mathematics and if necessary remind them of this. This allows a continuity between subjects and allows students to see connections between them which reinforces their understanding.

Students in the current year 7 have been taking part in the Numeracy Progress Units (NPU) which are currently being run during a registration time. These sessions are to help students improve their numeracy skills so that they have full access to the entire curriculum.

Gifted and talented students have taken part in many extra-curricular activities such as the mathematics master classes at Teesside University and the national UKMT Mathematics Challenge -  many of them received certificates and five qualified for further rounds.

I feel that this year has been a successful year for numeracy across the Academy and plan to build on this further in the years to come.
